“It represents a fresh, creative and distinctive new member of the Volvo line-up. So it only feels natural to reveal the XC40 here in Milan, a buzzing European hotspot for fashion, art, design and lifestyle.”

Contrast cladding, front and rear bumpers and roof help to distinguish it from the range, along with a gloss black finish.

It retains the Thor hammer signature front headlight design and rear light design seen on the XC60 and XC90, but the top of the hammer has been inverted slightly to further distinguish it.

Inside the car the centre console and display borrows design elements from the Xc60/XC90.

This new car will cost from £26,90 in the UK and is available to order now.

It is the first model to be built on the company’s new CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform

Volvo said that car was designed primarily for the city and features advanced connectivity, entertainment and safety technology.

Powering the SUV will be a choice of three petrol and two diesel engines which  will initially be available at launch, with power ranging from 150 to 250 bhp.

All of these engines are 2.0-litre – there are 156 hp T3, 190 hp T4 and 247 hp T5 petrols, and 150 hp D3 and 190 hp D4 diesels.

T3 is exclusively available as a front-wheel drive vehicle while the D3 is offered as a front or all-wheel drive car.

The T4, T5 and D4 all come with all-wheel drive and an automative gearbox as standard.

No performance figures from these powertrains have been confirmed yet but will likely be revealed later this year.

Entry-level Momentum versions have the most customisable interior inducing the textile and vinyl interior upholstery with the choice of a  contrast-coloured white roof and door mirrors, along with white and black alloy wheels.

Also standard are LED headlights, dual-zone climate control with Volvo’s sophisticated ‘CleanZone’ air-filtration system, a 12.3” active TFT configurable driver’s information display and rear parking sensors. Alloy wheels are 18” as standard, with up to 21” wheels available as an option.

Volvo’s On Call smartphone app and emergency assistance package is fitted on every spec XC40. It allows you to control functions such as locking and unlocking the doors and even heat or cool the cabin remotely.

It also has an in-built GPS to give emergency services your exact location in the vent of an accident.

Standard safety equipment across the range includes automatic emergency braking which can detect pedestrians cyclists and large animals to avoid low-speed collisions and Oncoming Lane Mitigation which warns you if you veer from your lane into the path of oncoming traffic.

Upgrading to the R-Design spec model will add sporty touches including a gloss black front grille and front and rear lower bumper sections, a black roof and door mirrors, and dual integrated exhaust pipes.
