Hyundai Kona 2017 REVEALED – 'milestone' SUV design and specs confirmed

Hyundai Kona 2017

is a brand-new SUV from the South Korean car manufacturer.

Hyundai has said that they haven’t built the Kona to just be another SUV in their vehicle range but it is instead a key vehicle for the brand’s progression.

“The All-New KONA is not just another car among Hyundai Motor’s established SUV range – it is an important milestone of our journey to become Asian automotive brand number one in Europe by 2021,” says Thomas A. Schmid, Chief Operating Officer at Hyundai Motor Europe.

“With its true SUV genes, a progressive design and premium features, KONA reflects the lifestyle of modern customers, enhancing the brand’s appeal and attracting new customers.”

In an attempt to achieve this, along with the introduction of the Kona, the South Korean carmaker aims to launch 30 new models and derivatives before 2021.

It’s perhaps the most-forward thinking SUV from Hyundai in terms of design and styling.

There is a lot of going on to make this car stand out and ‘not just another car’ – and most of it works.

It adopts the signature Cascading Grille featured on their new cars such as the i30 and features a new twin headlight design with the LED Daytime Running Lights positioned on top of the LED headlights.

The 174bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine can sprint from 0-62mph in just 7.9 seconds

Kona is characterised by its high-contrast fender cladding which make it look truly rugged and funky.

The roof pillars and roof itself can also come in contrasting colours, a design feature similar to the Renault Captur, which will become one of its rivals alongside the Nissan Juke.

There is also matte silver accents across the body and on the rear bumper adding to this dynamic, millennial-focused styling.

Ten exterior colours can be combined with two roof designs for a total of twenty colour combinations.

The exterior colours available for the Kona are Phantom Black, Chalk White, Lake Silver, Dark Knight, Pulse Red, Tangerine Comet, Acid Yellow, Blue Lagoon, Ceramic Blue and Velvet Dune (light grey).

There is a choice of two turbocharged, small-displacement petrol powertrains – a 118bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine and a 174bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine. The latter produces 265Nm of torque and can sprint from 0-62mph in just 7.9 seconds.

The 1.0-litre T-GDI 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine has 120PS and 172Nm.

More powertrain operons are likely to be added to the range later in the year including a high-powered diesel.

Optional four-wheel drive and seven-speed transmissions are also available on the new range. The save-speed clutch improves fuel consumption of CO2 emissions up to 20 per cent.

There is a new list of safety features which include Hyundai Motor’s Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Attention Alert, Static Bending Light and Smart High Beam.

Inside the car the interior reflects the exterior design with optional instrument tim accents in Lime, Orange and Red.

An optional eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system is central to the dashboard and incorporates navigation, smartphone connectivity and infotainment.

Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connective and live maps are a few of the standard features and a wireless inductive charging point.

There is also a new head-up display (HUD) with class-leading luminance improving driver concentration.

Luggage space totals 361 litres and when the 60:40 foldable rear seats are collapsed this increases to 1,143-litres.

Full UK line-up and pricing will be announced in due course.
